Getting Your House Ready for the Coming Winter

Now that winter is almost here, it's time to start preparing your home for the cold weather. Taking a few moments to check and maintain certain areas of your house can help prevent any major problems. Here are some things you should do to get your house ready:

Check and clean gutters.

Ensure that gutters and downspouts are clean so rainwater can move away from your home. Clogged gutters can cause major issues, including roof damage and structural problems.

Inspect roof shingles.

Winter weather is harsher on roofs than summer weather, so it’s important to ensure there aren’t any problem areas on your roof. Look for missing or damaged shingles and replace them if necessary.

Clean outdoor furniture.

Before storing outdoor furniture, clean it so that dirt and grime don't get into the fabric or wood. This will help prolong its life and keep it looking good all winter.

Seal doors and windows.

Check for any gaps around your windows or doors and seal them if necessary. This will help keep out drafts, saving you money on your monthly energy bill.

Clean the fireplace.

If you have a fireplace, make sure to clean it before lighting a fire in it. Check the flue and any other fireplace parts to ensure they’re working properly.

Once you’ve determined that your home is winter-ready, it’s time to start thinking about proactive measures to keep the cold out. Ensure all windows and doors are properly sealed; this will help prevent drafts from entering your home and save energy. You can also caulk or weatherstrip around windows and doors for added protection. Replace cracked or worn window panes to prevent cold air from getting in. Additionally, if you have a fireplace, ensure it is inspected and cleaned by a certified chimney sweep before the winter season starts.

To further protect your home against cold weather, consider adding insulation to areas such as attics and walls. Adding insulation will help to reduce energy costs and keep your home more comfortable. Also, inspect and repair any cracks or gaps in the exterior of your houses - such as flaking paint, holes in siding, or rotting wood that may let cold air in.

One last step to winter-prepare your home is to check the HVAC system. If your HVAC unit is old or hasn’t been serviced in a while, it’s important to have an inspection done and schedule any needed repairs before the cold weather sets in. Also, clean or replace air filters regularly so that the air flowing through your home is free from dust and allergens.

These simple steps will help your home stay safe and comfortable this winter. Don’t wait until it’s too late – take action now and prepare for the cold weather!
